Overview
The race to decarbonize the aviation sector is intensifying as technologies evolve and net-zero targets draw nearer. Industry leaders and politicians are under growing pressure to increase efficiencies and align on the scale-up of low-emission solutions whilst maintaining safety, commercial viability and growth. At least two-thirds of aviation’s carbon reduction is expected to come from sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). With SAF technology already proven, incentives and mandates aimed at maximizing their capacity are crucial steps in the transition to non-fossil energy. Efforts are also focused on longer-term development and ways to tackle the challenges of electric and hydrogen propulsion.
Policymakers and the energy and finance sectors have a vital role in the new aviation economy. Cooperation, innovation and investment are fundamental to eliminating climate impact, especially given the complexity and capital-intensity of this hard-to-abate industry. Where are the opportunities to improve sustainability, costs and efficiencies through collaboration and partnerships? What barriers stand in the way of the successful scale-up and commercialization of alternative aviation fuels? How can digital tools aid decision-making and development?
The Sustainable Aerospace Together Forum, hosted by Boeing and FT Live, gathered the aviation sector together with policy, energy and finance leaders. The discussion focused on the capabilities, cooperation and solutions needed to align and ensure the industry reaches its decarbonization targets and business goals.
